$Today$Haney vs Prograis round-by-round live updates

The sport is set to close out 2023 with plenty of cards scheduled as we enter fall and winter

🔴🥊HANEY VS PROGRAIS

Devin Haney has pushed all his chips in.

The lineal king of the lightweight division has made clear that he isn’t headed back to 135 pounds, vacating all of his alphabet titles ahead of a move to junior welterweight. Coming off his close, competitive win over Vasyl Lomachenko in one of the best fights of 2023, Haney is going right at one of the best of the next division up.

It’s new belt or bust.

Regis Prograis is coming off one of the most uneven performances of his career, an awkward decision over Danielito Zorrilla that Prograis still won wide on two cards in a split decision. To date, his only loss came in an excellent affair with Josh Taylor in the finals of the World Boxing Super Series. That defeat came four years ago and Prograis hasn’t been in an event with the same profile since.

He’s in one this Saturday (DAZN PPV, 8 PM EST).

The Chase Center in San Francisco is sold out and the buzz has built for a serious fight fan’s fight.

Let’s get into it.

The Pick: Haney enters the fight with five consecutive wins over fighters ranked top ten or champion at lightweight by TBRB or the Ring. The last three have come against the very top of the class and he’s continuing the trend here. Without an immediate path to a Tank Davis or Teofimo Lopez, a lot of young fighters might have looked for less of a test than Prograis.

Will Haney regret it?

While the official listing for the fight says these men are the same height, shared personal appearances indicate Haney is the taller man. He’s certainly the longer one, with a reach advantage of some four inches. Haney likes to work off the jab and control the distance of fights and Prograis is going to have to work hard to get past the jab and land consistently.

Against Lomachenko, Haney also showed he was comfortable at close quarters and built a lead early with excellent body attacks. If Haney can get to Prograis’s body early on, and avoid return fire, he’ll test the older man’s legs. There will be danger going to the body though because Prograis can land, and land hard, when he’s in range.

Prograis in his last few fights doesn’t look as quick in his last two fights as he was a few years ago but the defending titlist still has good hand speed and explosiveness. Prograis can sometimes throw wide but he launches from the sort of odd angles that make it hard to defend or reply to. Prograis also has an excellent southpaw lead to the body that creates openings for bombs over the top. Haney will have to be defensively responsible all night.

The thinking here is the extra weight will be a benefit to a Haney whose body still looked drawn at junior welterweight at Friday’s weigh-in. He’s the one with the naturally larger frame, entering his physical prime now. Prograis is probably exiting his own, making this a ship’s passing moment fraught with danger for both men.

Haney won’t stop Prograis from landing all night so the question is how he weathers any storms. Haney has shown the ring IQ to survive a dangerous moment (against Linares) and isn’t afraid to tie an opponent up to freeze the action until he can get back to the range he prefers. That could mean a mix of dramatic and frustrating moments for a Prograis who will see a lot of rounds go into the bank for Haney while waiting for opportunities to hurt the younger man.

The pick is Haney by decision.

Rold Picks 2023: 38-14
